Felt Unicorn, pattern and easy step-by-step tutorial

Make a sweet little felt unicorn with this easy felt pattern and simple step-by-step tutorial. This gentle, Waldorf-inspired project is all about slowing down, working with soft materials, and enjoying the process as your unicorn comes to life. Perfect for beginners, it’s a lovely toy for a child, or as a gift, or just to enjoy the crafting process.

I love making felt toys, and the satisfaction of seeing how each individual one turns out. It’s a very relaxing activity. You can always undo things that don’t go as you want and use materials that you have from other felt projects. And create a special toy for a child.

Stitches:

For this unicorn, you will use the blanket stitch for the body.

A running stitch for the mane and tail.

A French knot for the eyes.

Materials:

  • unicorn sewing pattern, Click Here for the free pattern
  • Wool felt, one or two colours.
  • Stuffing wool
  • Thread & needle
  • Scissors
  • Wool for the mane and tail
  • Embroidery thread for the eyes and, if you prefer, for the mane instead of the wool.

How to make it:

A Felt Unicorn pattern, scissors, needles and thread and felt.

Gather all your materials and cut the paper pattern.

Felt Unicorn paper pattern cut out, and pin to a piece of felt.

Pin the paper unicorn body securely to the felt and cut.

Then do the same with the under body and ears. (For the ears, you can use a different felt colour for the inside of the ears and inside of the legs.)

Felt Unicorn pieces pin together.

Pin the two felt pieces for the body and the inside of the legs together.

And start sewing using a blanket stitch from the back of the unicorn (just under where the tail will go). All the way to the top of the head, leaving the neck and top back open.

Once you sew up to the horn, you can start stuffing the felt unicorn with wool.

Start with the legs, using small pieces of stuffing wool and the help of a crochet hook or the back of a pencil to push the wool in.

Then stuff the head and the horn (you will need very small pieces of wool to stuff the horn), and then the rest of the body.

The Mane:

Making the mane a Felt Unicorn.

Once you have almost all the felt unicorn stuffed, you can sew the mane.

To make the mane, roll some wool (or embroidery thread) between your fingers to the desired length (so use more fingers if you want the mane longer).

Then insert the first roll of wool into the top of the unicorn’s head just behind the horn, and sew using a small running stitch.

Then repeat with another roll of wool, until you reach the end of the neck.

When you finish the mane, keep sewing with a blanket stitch leaving A small opening for the tail

Using scissors, cut the loop of the wool and any uneven pieces of wool.

The tail:

To make the tail, cut three long pieces of wool and braid them.

Before you sew the tail, stuff in more wool if needed.

Then insert the braid in the open space and sew it using a running stitch.

The Ears:

Sew the two ears together, with their insides facing each other.

Then you can mark with a pencil where the ears are going to go.

I sew the two ears at the same time, going from one side to the other.

The Horn:

Decorating the horn of a Felt Unicorn with a spiral thread.

To decorate the horn, thread a needle with a colour thread.

Do a stitch from the back of the horn to the front and back to the same place. Go in a spiral with the thread to the top of the horn. Insert the needle through the top of the horn, come out around the neck, and cut the thread.

The eyes:

For the eyes, you can use a French knot.

Mark where the eyes will go.

To make a French knot, I use a black embroidered piece of thread. I insert the needle into one of the eye marks and come out at the other side mark, then roll the thread twice around the needle and go back from the same place you just came out of, holding the thread until it is all passed. Then repeat for the other eye.
