Three handmade felt crowns

Waldorf birthday crown

In some Waldorf kindergartens, on a child’s birthday, the teacher will bring out the birthday crown and cape for the birthday child to wear that day. And she will also read a lovely story about how the child came to be in the special family that the child comes from.

You can still create this tradition at home; we do it in our family until the child turns 9! So it’s nice to have a crown we use every year, and only for that, so it’s a special crown!

What you need:

For the crown, you need good quality felt, 100% wool felt is best, because not only does it feel good, but it’s also more natural than synthetic felt, and your crown will last much longer! But it is more expensive.

You will also need materials for decorating. For these crowns, I use roving wool, wool, and pieces of felt and wool. These, of course, are just to inspire you; the beauty of making these crowns is that they are unique for the child they are made for.

I make them all by hand sewing, but depending on your design, you can use a sewing machine.

I have PDF templates for you to download, but you can also just draw them yourself.

  • Needle & thread

Then use the piece you just cut, pin it to the second piece of felt, and cut it out.

Sewing a felt crown.

Keep the two pieces of felt pinned together, and using a blanket stitch, start stitching from one end.

When you reach the other end, insert one cm of the elastic between the two pieces of felt, and sew it with a backstitch or running stitch.

When you reach the other side, measure your child’s head. If you don’t have a child to measure, 27cm of elastic should fit most children.

Variations:

  • If you want a neater finish, decorate the front piece of felt of the crown before joining together the two pieces of felt. Do this also if you are using a sewing machine to sew the crown decorations.
