How to make God’s eye (Ojo de Dios) step by step

A God's eye

The God’s Eye craft is a simple and colourful weaving project made with sticks and yarn, perfect for children and beginners. In this step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to make a God’s Eye.

Children create the magical God’s Eye craft using sticks, yarn, and imagination. As they wrap colourful yarn around crossed sticks, a bright pattern slowly appears—like a secret design revealing itself one layer at a time.

Long ago, people believed these woven eyes watched over and protected the maker, and today they invite children into a calm, creative moment where they weave colours, wishes, and stories together.

The Huichol (Wixárika) people of Mexico created the Ojo de Dios, or God’s Eye, as a colourful weaving that traditionally symbolised protection and mindfulness.

A nice little fact about God’s eye (ojos de Dios)

According to the Wixárika religion, the God’s Eye has a very important spiritual function, and it is also believed that its creation establishes a direct connection with the gods and spirits, allowing interaction with the spiritual world. Each God’s Eye is woven with a specific intention, whether for protection, healing, abundance, or any other spiritual purpose.

To make the God’s eye, all you will need is:

colour yarn scissors and two sticks.
  • Two sticks. They can be sticks you collect from outside, skewer sticks or popsicle sticks.
  • Colour yarn, or embroidery yarn

You can choose the order you want to wave the god’s eye beforehand or along the way.

Two sticks with a yarn wrap in the middle.

I’m using two sticks about 15 cm long for this example.

You will start in the centre of the God’s eye by placing one stick beside the other, get your chosen first piece of yarn, and wrap it around the middle of the two sticks a few times.

Now separate the sticks to form a cross.

Wrap the yarn around the centre of the cross in one direction and then the other.

Once it’s tight, you can start weaving.

Go around the stick and complete a full circle. Once you get to the top again, cross to the next stick from the top-under-top, to wrap the yarn around the second stick, and go to the next.

Keep doing a couple of rounds.

When you have enough of the first colour, finish with a knot

adding a new colour to the weaving of a God's eye.

Get the next color a new piece of yarn. Go around the stick (twice to hold the yarn) with the next colour. Or you can tie a knot at the end of the yarn, the previous yarn to the end of the new colour.

Keep adding a new color until you are happy with your God’s eye.

When you finish with the last colour, leave enough yarn to secure a loop.

Make a hanging loop with a small piece of yarn, hold it against the stick and wrap the leftover yarn around the stick and the loop ends.

A finish God's eye.

Cut all the leftover pieces of wool from the back of the God’s eye, if you have any.

You can also cut off the ends of the sticks.

And you have finished your own God’s eye
